Cell phones are the things in your pocket as powerful as a computer and as entertaining as any video game console. We all have one, you probably have yours on you or on your desk as you’re reading this. You might even be reading this from your phone. Phones are mostly prohibited at Brownell. Off and out of sight is most teacher’s policy. But should cell phones be as restricted in school as they are?

I think that the restriction on cell phones is excessive. Why aren’t we allowed to listen to music during days where we’re  working on a project in class? Or why can’t we check our grades during class? Why can’t we study using our online methods? We should be able to use our phones during class more than we do.

And so do many students at Brownell. Phones can be used as learning tools. Any question can be answered by Siri faster than looking in a textbook, and there are many apps that students can use to collect data and information. Quizlet can be used to create flashcards to study, or Kahoot can be used to make fun and simple quizzes for students. Not to mention the Google apps that let you create documents and projects.

Most teachers say yes. Mr. Sonnenberg, seventh grade science teacher, said that cellphone restriction is,”perfect where it is. For the most part, students use their phones as they should be used”.

A lot of teachers think that kids use their phones appropriately. “You don’t need to use your phone more than you do at school,” Mr. Sonnenberg added. And while that’s valid, I don’t think that “off and away” rule should be as strict as it is.
