The Library of Babel is like any other library, aside from the fact that it contains every single book that has been written, will be written, or could be written, and it doesn’t stop there, it contains every possible combination of letters and words that could ever exist, so anything that has been said, will be said, or could be said is stored in this digital library.

The library website is sorted into hexes, each hex sorted into shelves, each shelf sorted into rows, each row sorted into volumes, each volume sorted into 410 pages. The library lets you search for any 3,200 character combination of English letters, periods, spaces and commas and without fail, every time, you will find what you are looking for.

This means that you could search for an exact description of your birth, and find it, any description of your death, and find it. There are two sections you can browse, random English letters commas, spaces and periods, so you will see 410 pages of something like this “wshgdf,. hjy ..,, dh skknms sj.” It’s kind of eerie and confusing.

The other section you can browse is random English words, this is the really interesting part. It has every combination of words that could exist, browsing without searching feels like a treasure hunt. To search, just type in whatever it is you’re looking for and you will without a doubt find exactly what you’re looking for.

The hardest part for people to understand is that, when you search something, you don’t just magically generate it, it’s already there, waiting to be discovered. Anything your search for will be on the same page every time you search it.

To the majority of people the concept of a library containing everything is still foreign and hard to comprehend, but after browsing the Library of Babel for a while, and reading about anything, everything, or nothing, it starts to come to together.
