The first day of school is not the most exciting or thrilling day of the year. Most students just dread the first day of school and wish summer could last forever. There are new lockers, new classes, new students, and even new lunch hours for some students. This year, there is another new part of school. And you can find it in your planner.

It has become harder and harder for students at Brownell to find quality clothing that fit and follow the dress-code guidelines. Many popular clothing brands such as American Eagle or Levi’s now have a large amount of ripped jeans, since they are becoming more popular. Brownell students complained as they complied with the dress code. Ripped jeans are a cool and up-to-date style right now, and plenty of students believed it was ridiculous to have ripped jeans against the dress code. Administrators decided to listen to students and ripped jeans. Jeans have always been popular, so this was a true victory for students who attend Brownell.

Spaghetti straps (also known as tank-tops) are also on the rise. With brands such as LuluLemon, and Ivivva, tank-tops needed to be removed from the dress code. Tank tops are great in the fall with a warm cardigan, on those 90 degree days on the Brownell field, gym class with Mrs.Francis, or with Mr.Sonnenberg doing science experiments outside.

Department stores such as Target and Marshalls have embraced the new fashions craze that include the so-called “short shorts”. The old Brownell rule was your shorts had to go past your hands. That was a completely unfair rule. Some students may be shorter but have long arms, while others may be tall and have short arms. I know that for myself, my old shorts had to be almost down to my knees due to the fact that I am short, and have long arms. This has satisfied students on the first day of school for the 2017/18 year.

The new dress code has made many students a lot happier. You can now go to school with ripped shorts that are short, and a tank top. Since we also have changing weather in Michigan, this has definitely improved the pride in our Bronco spirit.
