The Grosse Pointe City Election has been crazy this year, because of the hotel, and the amount of positions that were open. From mayor to City Council, the results are out and depending on your view, some are glad while others are not pleased.

First, the new mayor is Christopher Boettcher who won with 1,021 votes, replacing the old mayor of 12 years, Dale Scrace who had 811 votes. Mr.Boettcher’s plans include not building a hotel, and keeping Grosse Pointe as Grosse Pointe oriented as possible. Mr.Scrace on the other hand, wanted to build a so called boutique hotel- a Cambria Suites. Mr.Scrace also wanted to keep Grosse Pointe as wealthy as possible, at all costs (no pun intended), including moving some Grosse Pointe buildings to Detroit. Some are upset about Mr.Boettcher winning, while others are joyful of the new plans.

Next up on the list is City Council. Out of the 4 candidates, 3 were voted into office. Those 3 are Sheila Tomkowiak with 1,091 votes, Daniel Williams with 1,077 votes, and Chris Walsh with 1,071 votes. David Fries lost with only 828 votes. Sheila Tomkowiak is for the planned Cambria Suites hotel, Daniel Williams is against the hotel proposal and wants all Grosse Pointe “Government” to stay in Grosse Pointe, and Chris Walsh’s plans have not been disclosed to the public yet. Plenty of citizens in Grosse Pointe are on their toes just waiting to see what this new council and new mayor decides to do with Grosse Pointe.

I was able to do an Exit Poll at Maire Elementary where City voting was held, and found that for every one vote for Scarce, there were 3 for Boettcher. Also, I got about 13 votes for Daniel Williams, 7 for Sheila Tomkowiak, 4 for David Fries, and 3 for Chris Walsh. The results for Mayor supported my data, but City Council showed some not surprising results. Even though my data wasn’t as accurate, we were still expecting an outcome like this. I also had about 5 people that came to me and told me that the reason that they participated in this election solely because of the hotel. Most people are against the hotel, which my data also supported.

Overall, this election was the most lively one in about 20 years. Depending on your view, you can make a decision as to whether or not you’re glad, or sad.
